Potentized organ preparations have been used for decades in Anthroposophic Medicine. Apartfrom Apis, Cantharis, Formica and Vespa crabro, Rudolf Steiner also recommended preparations using material from higher animals. Numerous organ preparations go back to his suggestions and ideas, among them Cerebellum, Cor, Epiphysis, Glandulae (parathyreoideae, suprarenalis and thyreoidea), Hypophysis, Iris bovis, Lamina quadrigemina, Lobus temporalis, Lymph, Medulla (oblongata and spinalis), Mesencephalon, Musculus (= myosin) and Pancreas. It is less well known that Samuel Hahnemann (1755- 1843) listed more than 150 animal substances in his pharmaceutical lexicon and that well-known 19th century homoeopaths used potentized organs and parts of organs. Organ therapy was also explored and developed further in natural-science-based medicine from the end of the 19th century. The historical evolution in the use of organ preparations in conventional medicine, the homoeopathic materia medica and Anthroposophic Medicine is considered in the paper.
