Rudolf Steiner used pastels to paint the Druid Stone in 1923, having returned to Dörnach from his visit to the druid centres in llkley and Penmaenmawr. Originally a "theme sketch"for Henni Geek, the work was not generally available until i929.The sketch, now much faded and one of Rudolf Steiner's main works presents the narrative of a Druid's healing impulse arising from his skills and knowledge as an initiate. The focal point and pivot is the "swastika scene" imagination. Early oral tradition (Alexander Strakosch and others), coal, iron, tin and silicone as well as the human form of the rock and the "giant in the mist" (Nedella) show that in those times, divine powers were felt to be at work in the natural world. Steiner produced the painting after Ita Wegman had put here epoch-making question about a mystery medicine and he had responded positively by deciding to write a vademecum of anthroposophical medicine (Extending Practical Medicine; Fundamentals). There was no question but that it should take up and transform Druid impulses. The prospect also gave rise to one theme in the Druid Stone which can hardly be discerned in the original today but is still evident in the 1:1 print made in 1963: A "nascent cross of light" (Ch. L.) to the right of the rainbow. With this, Steiner was undoubtedly referring to the central mission of anthroposophical medicine, which is to transform ancient initiation knowledge into one that is Christian and Michaelic. The author is doing source studies using the means available in the science of art.
