The reasons for studying medicine and entering the medical profession are many and varied. Apart from social aspects, the human organism itself is a challenge to medicine because of its complexity. Progress has been made at various levels—in the sphere of cell and organ replacement, in terms of strengthening powers of regulation, in the interplay of body and soul, in supporting autonomy and development. Different views of the organism and ideals lead to the ideal of a medicine for the whole human being in the integrative medicine concept, with the physician its advocate.
