Fermented aqueous extracts of Citrus limon L. and Cydonia oblonga Mill. – phytochemical data and antiallergic potential of medicinal products of these extracts

Rudolf Steiner’s (1861–1925) reflections on the genesis and treatment of allergic conditions of the upper and lower respiratory tract led to the development of anthroposophic medicines made from lemon and quince extracts. The paper presents a review of medicines based on fermented aqueous extracts of the fruits from Citrus limon L. and Cydonia oblonga Mill. The plants and their fruits, the constituents of the fruits, the manufacture of the fermented aqueous extracts of Citrus limon L. (‘Citrus’) and Cydonia oblonga Mill. (‘Cydonia’) and the products Citrus e fructibus, Cydonia e fructibus and the combination of the two (Citrus e fructibus/Cydonia e fructibus) are described. Current phytochemical data for the fermented aqueous extracts and in vitro studies using the individual extracts and the combination show that the ‘Citrus’ extract inhibits degranulation of basophilic rat cells, but the ‘Cydonia’ extract does not, and that the combination inhibits the release of allergy-promoting cytokines from human mast cells stronger than the individual extracts do. A comparative study using the individual substances dominant in phytochemical extract analysis, eriocitrin (for the ‘Citrus’ extract) and neochlorogenic acid (for the ‘Cydonia’ extract), showed that it is the combined extracts which are responsible for the action and not the individual substances. The available data provide a deeper insight into medicines produced with fermented aqueous extracts from Citrus limon L. and Cydonia oblonga Mill. fruits for medical professionals, as a basis for recommendation to patients suffering from allergic, pollen-induced symptoms.
