Self-help in treating epilepsy

First we are going to expound the problems of the currently predominant conventional definition of epilepsy. On the basis of a case record we will establish the blind spots of this definition. The case record is taken from a qualitative pilot study that is currently in progress at Herdecke Community Hospital. By means of it, we develop a psychosomatic model of epilepsy. Hypotheses will be formulated to explain how behavioral changes in the life of the patient have been effective in terms of 1) a significant decrease in seizure frequency and 2) an improvement in the sense of self-efficacy. The therapeutic process will then be portrayed in its single components: 1) Introduction to the psychosomatic model that opens up the opportunity for taking action oneself. 2a) Thorough history-taking (including the biographic context of the first seizure) and psychological testing. 2b) Daily diary records in combination with a seizure calendar as the basis for a regular functional analysis of the seizure context. The resultant understanding of interacting seizure precipitating factors provides the basis for developing strategies to proactively influence the build-up of seizure activity. 3) Development of a personalized meditative relaxation/visualization technique. 4) Development of aura interruption techniques. Last but not least the short-term and long-term efficacy of the treatment method will be considered in reference to the psychosomatic model and the anthroposophical meaning of self-efficacy in terms of the formulation of karmic tasks to act will be discussed.
