Learning by doing – The royal road to medical proficiency

In addition to formal learning in lectures, tutorials and courses, informal learning in clinical practice plays a central role in medical training. The things which students learn in nursing practice, medical visitations of a hospital or their practical year cannot be clearly defined. It is also not clear how learning by doing actually happens, what factors may help or hinder it. Against this background theoretical reflections are made in this paper concerning the importance of hands-on practice in medical training. Learning in communities of action and learning from models, two important theories for learning by doing, are also discussed. An important insight gained is that the quality and degree of success greatly depends not only on the learners’ prior knowledge and experience but also on various factors, especially social ones, of the learning environment.
