What you see when you stop looking

In sensory perception processes, neurological processes can be observed to a certain degree, but how neural activity generates conscious sensory perception has not yet been researched. The aim of the work described here was to show that the perceptual process takes place not only on a physical-material level, but also on a second, non-physical-material level. Just as the sense organs of the physical body react on the physical-material plane, the non-physical-material plane of the human organisation also reacts. This reaction can be observed in the visual process in the formation of the afterimages.

In order to show that visual afterimages take place as an entity on a second, non-physical-material level, accompanied by a different experience of consciousness than ordinary waking consciousness, an experiment was designed with a patient with hemineglect. This led to the observation of two different forms of consciousness functioning independently of each other, which could indicate that two different levels of perception are involved in sensory perception.
