Rheum rhaponticum – Heilpflanzenporträt und anthroposophisch-medizinische Anwendungserfahrungen in der Menopause

Die bekannte Gattung Rheum, Rhabarber, mit über 60 Arten, hat sich – von China und Zentralasien ausgehend – als Heilmittel und Gemüse fast weltweit verbreitet. Insbesondere die Rhabarber-Art Rheum rhaponticum ist allgemein eher als Nahrungs- denn als Heilmittel bekannt, obwohl – wie auch Rheum palmatum, Rheum officinale und andere – seit Jahrhunderten auch therapeutisch im Einsatz. Früher in erster Linie als erweitertes Abführmittel verwendet, sind heute Indikationen der Wurzel im allgemeingynäkologischen Bereich wichtiger geworden, einerseits durch Wurzelextrakte – innerlich gegen Wechseljahrbeschwerden eingenommen –, andererseits durch die topische Anwendung. Die Rhapontik-Rhabarberwurzel ist in der Anthroposophischen Medizin seit Jahren als Salbe – neu auch als Vaginal-Globuli/-Suppositorien – gegen Trockenheit von Schleimhäuten des Urogenitaltrakts im Einsatz, gut bewährt und dokumentiert. In einer Fallserie mit 48 Patientinnen zeigte sich Rheum rhaponticum Salbe in den Konzentrationen 0,1 % (D2) und 0,4 %, topisch appliziert bei postmenopausaler Atrophie der labialen und vaginalen Schleimhaut mit Trockenheit, Brennen oder Engegefühl, als wirksam und sehr gut verträglich.

The familiar genus Rheum, rhubarb, with more than 60 species, has spread as a medicinal agent and a food plant to almost the whole world from China and Central Asia. Rheum rhaponticum in particular is generally known as a food rather than a medicinal agent, although – like Rheum palmatum, Rheum officinale and other species – it has also been used for centuries as a medicine. Formerly used mainly as a laxative, use of the root in the field of gynaecology has now become the more important indication, on the one hand in form of root extracts taken by mouth for symptoms connected with the climacteric, and on the other hand for topical use. In anthroposophic medicine, rhapontic rhubarb root has been used for years as an ointment – nowadays also pessaries – for dry mucous membranes in the urogenital tract, to good effect and well documented. In a study of 48 women, topical application of Rheum rhaponticum ointment 0.1 % (D2) and 0.4 % has proved effective and well tolerated in treating postmenopausal atrophy of labial and vaginal mucosa involving dryness, burning sensation or sense of tightness.
