Sedative and antihistamine effects of Bryophyllum pinnatum: Implications for the treatment of sleep disorders and allergies

‘In the beginning was the Word’. Research on herbal medications begins with clinical practice and eventually – often after leading to modifications and improvements – strengthens clinical practice. These are the key points. Tolerance and efficacy are established in addition, as is the mode of action. The subject of this paper are the sedative and antihistamine actions of Bryophyllum pinnatum. Rudolf Steiner introduced Bryophyllum into the anthroposophic pharmacopoeia for the treatment of hysteria, meaning excessive independence of metabolic processes. A characterization of the range of indications published 90 years later showed that B. pinnatum preparations are prescribed for sleep disorders and allergic reactions as well as many other indications (1, 2). Two recent non-interventional studies on pregnant women (3) and cancer patients (4) have furthermore shown improvement in the quality of sleep with B. pinnatum. As far as we know, the antiallergic actions of B. pinnatum have not yet been the subject of clinical trials. Preclinical data are available on both indications.
