Clinical outcomes of rhythmical massage – A prospective cohort study with Swiss outpatients

Rhythmic Massage (RM) is a form of massage therapy which is extensively used in anthroposophic medicine. Its use and effects were investigated in a prospective cohort study by analysing the clinical results with patients in a Swiss hospital and an associated group practice. The most frequent indications were mental and behavioural disorders (36 %), neoplasms (22 %) and musculoskeletal conditions. Statistically significant improvement in the symptoms and also in quality of life was noted between initial situation and end of therapy. Most of the improvements persisted until follow-up. Self-defined treatment goals were largely achieved and the medical practitioners in charge observed a decrease in the severity of the condition. The study therefore suggests that it would be profitable to do further controlled studies for rhythmic massage on specific indications.
