“Every child will cost you a tooth” – Or will (bad) teeth actually cost you the child?

Even today the causal relationship between pregnancy and the mother’s dental status is not a myth. It can be proven in a bidirectional way, although there are no monocausal links. A generalized periodontal disease is regarded as a risk factor for premature birth. Therefore an early and consequent dental prophylaxis supports both the mother in living through pregnancy with intact teeth and the fetus in developing undisturbed by inflammatory messengers. An early cooperation between gynecologists, obstetricians, general practitioners, midwives and dentists can be of particular help in the case of achieving a successful pregnancy since periodontitis also affects the fertility of both sexes.
