Die Quitte (Cydonia oblonga) zählt zur Familie der Rosaceae, nimmt in dieser aber eine deutliche Sonderstellung ein. Als typische Substanzbildungen der Rosengewächse dominieren Gerbstoffe, Zucker und cyanogene Glykoside; die Quitte hingegen akkumuliert Säuren, Pektin und Schleim. Morphologisch zeigt sie Merkmale einer unreif bleibenden Wildfrucht. Während die Zitrone (Citrus limon) die Fruchtbildung im Wässrigen strukturiert, verdichtet die Quitte sie im holzigkompakten Fruchtfleisch weiter bis ins Feste hinein. Somit erscheint die Quitte als sinnvolle Ergänzung der Zitrone in der Heilmittel-Komposition Citrus e fructibus/Cydonia e fructibus (Gencydo®),die bei Heuschnupfen und (allergischem) Asthma als Injektion und zunehmend auch als Inhalation zum Einsatz kommt.
Quince (Cydonia oblonga) is a member of the Rosaceae family, but stands out clearly from the other members of the family. The Rosaceae typically produce tannins, sugars and cyanogenic glucosides, whereas the quince accumulates acids, pectin and mucilage. Morphologically it shows characteristics of a non-ripening wild fruit. While the lemon (Citrus limon) structures the fruit formation in an aqueous environment, the quince compresses the fruit formation further into the solid in its woody-compact pulp.Thus quince appears as a suitable extension of the lemon in the pharmaceutical composition Citrus/ Cydonia, which is used for hay fever and (allergic) asthma as an injection, and increasingly also as an inhalation.
