Die Plazentazotten sind fähig, peristaltische Bewegungen auszuführen. Der Autor nimmt an, dass diese peristaltischen Bewegungen die für den komplizierten Plazentarkreislauf notwendige Energie liefern, da das kaum entwickelte menschliche Herz hierfür nicht befähigt scheint. Die Zotten weisen lediglich Kapillaren auf ohne venöse und muskuläre Elemente. Der Kapillardruck unterliegt dauernden Schwankungen, ebenso ändert sich das Lumen fortwährend. Diese Druckund Lumenveränderungen ermöglichen Absorption und Exkretion der vom Fötus benötigten bzw. abzugebenden Stoffe.
The villi of the placenta are capable of peristaltic motion. The author assumes that this provides the energy needed for the complex placental circulation, as the human heart, only little developed, would not appearto be capable of this. The villi merely have capillaries with no venous or muscular elements present.The capillary pressure is subject to constant fluctuation, with the lumen also changing all the time.These changes in pressure and lumen make it possible to absorb and excrete the substances required and no longer required by the fetus.
